googleadcentered.shtml

Is it possible for you to learn how to refinish wood floors in your home without the help of a professional? Refinishing wood floors is definitely a challenge and if not done correctly, could cause damage to your wood floors instead of making them better.

Anyone who has wood floors in their home realizes that wood floors are an investment in the overall value of the home and need to be cared for appropriately.

When Should You Refinish Floors?

Time and activity are enemies of any type of flooring in a home and hardwood floors are no exception.

The nature of floors created from hard wood is typically very durable and are appreciated from that standpoint as ideal flooring for high traffic areas and rooms of the home without high moisture content.

The time to refinish your floors is when daily wear and tear, dullness, scratches, or water stains have begun to take their toll on the surface appearance of your floor. Another time you may want to consider refinishing hardwood floors is if you’ve just purchased a home that had wood floors hiding under carpeting.

Learn How to Refinish Floors or Hire a Pro?

This is a valid question considering what it would take to replace the entire floor instead of refinishing it. If you choose to refinish the floor yourself, you’ll need to educate yourself on the tools necessary and the technique that would work correctly so you won’t damage the floors during the refinishing process.

In the case that you aren’t confident about doing it yourself, this is the time to hire a professional to do the job for you. Paying for the professional job may be well worth your peace of mind knowing that it will be done correctly. However, if you choose to do it yourself, you’ll need the following tools.

  • Floor edger
  • Drum sander
  • Buffer
  • Orbital or palm sander
  • Scraper and putty knife
  • Shop vacuum (it does create a lot of dust)
  • Protection for your eyes and ears
  • Bristle brush or foam applicators
  • Tack cloths

You can find these tools at your local hardware store, but it’s best to rent them instead.

How to Refinish Wood Floors – Tips

    1) Replace any boards that have significant damage or are sagged, buckled, or warped
    2) Remove everything from the room and sweep the floor
    3) Nail down any nails that may have worked their way up
    4) Cover the openings to the room or you’ll be cleaning up dust in the other rooms of the house for a lot longer than you’d like. Cover the vents too.
    5) Sand the floor completely. Vacuum over the sanded area. Follow up with a tack cloth so you’ve captured all the fine particles.
    6) Using wood filler, fill in the dents or gaps in the wood. Allow the filler to dry overnight.
    7) The following morning, apply two to four coats of a wood finish. In between each coat, it’s important to sand the surface and then pick up all the fine particulates with a tack cloth. Once you’ve reached the sheen you desire, don’t sand the topcoat.

Why should you refinish your floors? You’ll discover a beautiful shine and rich luster underneath all the buildup and scratches. You’ll bring new life to the floor and to the overall space. You’ll automatically increase the value of your home and get to enjoy the warm beauty of the natural wood grains too! Use these steps on how to refinish wood floors and you will be on your way to beautiful floors.
