Decorating Small Rooms

Decorating small rooms can be a challenge if you’re not aware of some basic design techniques and tips. Once you have these down, you’ll be decorating your small bathroom, kitchen, and bedrooms like a pro.

One of the key elements for small room decorating is functional storage. Utilize your space the best way possible by keeping in mind how items can serve dual functions within the space.

Decorating small rooms should always begin with a de-cluttering of any items that aren’t necessary or beloved. A clean and organized room, no matter what size, is always attractive and inviting.

Decorating Small Kitchens

  • A table or desk can serve as a counter, a prep area and a place to pay the bills.

  • Opt for a smaller-than-standard refrigerator to free up space in a small kitchen.

  • Islands or butcher blocks on wheels are perfect for instant prep or serving areas when needed. These pieces should have built-in storage.

  • Free up space in your cabinets and drawers by suspending a pot rack from the ceiling.

  • A small kitchen is the ideal setting for a built-in banquette with storage underneath the seats. Add splashes of color in the seat cushions and throw pillows.

  • Drop-leaf tables can be extended for guests, but otherwise provide just the eating are you need daily.

  • Room for only one bowl sink? A sink style featuring a deeper bowl may come in handy.

  • Use hand towels, oven mitts, and hot pads to bring color and theme into a small kitchen.

    Decorating Small Bedrooms

  • Instead of a king size bed, perhaps a queen size or full size would be enough space for you to get a good night’s sleep. If a platform bed fits your décor, this style of bed will provide excellent storage within the base.

  • Futons double as a seating area and bed.

  • Paint the bedroom walls a soothing color with contrasting trim or stick with a monochromatic color scheme throughout, adding patterns with bedding and throw pillows.

  • Vertically striped wallpaper or striped draperies will make any small bedroom appear larger by drawing the eye upward.

  • Create visual interest from the ceiling to the floor with flowing fabrics surrounding the bed or simply acting as a headboard.

  • Decorating small spaces with little wall space can be difficult for placing furniture. Use a bay window as the “headboard” for your bed instead of placing the head of the bed against a blank wall.

  • Choose dressers or armoires that are more vertical than horizontal. Better yet, custom build your own floor to ceiling clothing storage.

  • You can even include seating by covering an armless chair with your favorite fabric.

  • Replace bulky bi-fold closet doors with a long drapery curtain in a color that matches the wall color.

  • Install a foldaway ironing station on the back of the bedroom door.

  • Utilize wall mounted shelves and baskets with lids for storage.

    Decorating a Small Bathroom

Decorating small rooms like bathrooms can seem impossible, but it really is possible to make your small bathroom cozy and inviting.

  • Recessed lighting or sconces on the walls

  • Replace your vanity with a pedestal sink, opening up more floor space.

  • Use mirrors to make the room appear more spacious.

  • Use towel racks, towel bars or over-the-door hanging options.

  • Create fabric shower curtains and window fashions from light and airy fabric. Use these treatments to add color and interest to the bathroom.

  • Beaded board on the lower half of the walls brings in some visual interest and clean lines.

  • Install or custom build a recessed medicine cabinet of at least 6-inches deep.

Use these ideas for decorating small rooms in your home, and work with what you have. You will see how fun it is to create cozy small spaces!
